Gyan Mudra is performed by joining tips of Thumb ( Fire ) and the Index Finger ( Air ). Remaining three fingers are left straight but relaxed.

The hand is kept on the knee as shown in the picture seated position in Sukhasan, Padmasan, and Vajrasan keeping your back straight. This mudra can be performed at any time. The best time is Mornings and Evenings while meditation and get maximum benefit. You can feel the benefits by practising this mudra for 30 Minutes continuously daily.
Gyan Mudra increases your memory power, intellectual power and control on your anger as well as you get relief from mental ailments like headaches, insomnia, stress and migraine pains giving you happiness and reduction in negative thoughts.
You can practise Prana Mudra after this mudra for 30 Minutes, this will give you more benefit.
